Louis Shapiro, HSS President and CEO Talks COVID19

Ortho Spine News interviews Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of HSS, about leading the institution during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Shapiro explains that the impact of COVID-19 knows no boundaries and also changes daily. With each day comes new challenges and more anxiety, but is also bringing out the best in people.

HSS is serving society by ramping down to only essential musculoskeletal care and also ramping up televisits. By March 27, there will be 200 doctors providing this service to patients. Mr. Shapiro cites that HSS is also creating an ‘orthopedic triage center’ with staff based at NewYork-Presbyterian emergency department.

Mr. Shapiro maintains that the financial health of HSS is strong and that the organization will be making decisions differently, will be organized differently and will spend less time on things of little consequence. “If we all conduct ourselves appropriately - instead of trying to outdo one another - then we have a superb chance to repair the healthcare system from the bottom up,” he says.
