We Asked an Expert What the Best Cardio Is to Lose Belly Fat — Here's What He Said

POPSUGAR reports cardio will help you burn fat, however spot reduction doesn’t work.

POPSUGAR spoke to Jason Machowsky RD, CSSD, RCEP, CSCS, exercise physiologist at HSS, who further explained, “Unfortunately, you can't say exactly where the fat is going to come from,” noting if the goal is to reduce the amount of belly fat you have, cardio based activities will help. Machowsky advised to continue strength training a few times a week, as this training signals to your body to preserve your muscle mass. “Strength training helps indicate that your body should spare your muscle as it’s losing weight and pull from your fat stores,” said Machowsky. He continued, “If your body is pulling from fat stores, you’ll have a better chance of losing belly fat.”

Machowsky suggested to take into account any conditions you have, and underscored the importance to not feel 100-percent exhausted once you’ve finished a 10-minute HIIT workout. Instead, find a happy medium that will challenge you and that you can sustain for 20 to 30 minutes each session, added Machowsky.
