During the Covid-19 Pandemic, This Lawyer Rebuilt His Boxing Gym at Home

The Wall Street Journal "What’s Your Workout” column features HSS sports medicine surgeon Riley J. Williams III, MD and others, offering tips on exercises that strengthen the muscles around the knee joint and exercises that people with knee pain should avoid and embrace.

Dr. Williams noted he encourages patients to strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteal muscles and the core muscles of the abdomen when dealing with debilitating knee pain. “I typically recommend that patients do functional exercises that target the co-contraction of multiple muscle groups of the lower extremity,” he said. “For example, a step-up exercise targets the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteal muscles of the pelvis in concert.”
