Clinical Challenges: Can OA Be Stopped?

MedPage Today featured HSS hip and knee surgeon Geoffrey H. Westrich, MD, in an article about the advancements of joint replacement for treating advanced osteoarthritis (OA).

"We are now telling patients that when we operate on them, there's a really good chance that the replacement can last the rest of their life," said Dr. Westrich.

"Even in younger patients, the plastics have gotten so much better, using highly cross-linked polyethylene, and the designs have improved so that patients in their 40s and 50s can expect to have the prosthesis for a very long time," he added.
