Youth Sports Injuries and Burnout: Dr. Andrew Pearle Explains Why We Need to Rethink Youth Sports

In a recent Fox News opinion piece, Andrew D. Pearle, sports medicine surgeon at HSS, argues that many young athletes are being pushed to specialize too early and compete year-round, increasing their risk of injury and burnout. He notes that children’s bones, muscles, and movement patterns are still developing and need adequate time for recovery. 

Drawing on his experience as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Pearle highlights the impact of injuries such as ACL tears and cautions that the pressure to maximize performance at a young age can have long-term consequences for health and physical activity. Instead, he advocates for a youth sports model that emphasizes multi-sport participation, age-appropriate development, rest, and enjoyment. 

According to Dr. Pearle, the true measure of success in youth sports is not how many scholarships or professional athletes are produced, but how many lifelong athletes are created.
