Why Ankylosing Spondylitis Can Make You Feel Isolated — and What to do About It

Everyday Health featured HSS rheumatologist Susan M. Goodman, MD, in an article about how those with ankylosing spondylitis can help manage feelings of isolation.

According to Dr. Goodman, isolating yourself socially because of ankylosing spondylitis may be a result of not having an adequate support system to help you navigate the condition.

"Many who feel disabled are reluctant to socialize. This is especially true for many forms of arthritis that affect younger adults, including ankylosing spondylitis," said Dr. Goodman.

She noted that pets can be great companions, and dogs in particular can help the owner get out and about.
