What Is Ozempic Feet? Dr. Rock Positano Explains the Link Between Rapid Weight Loss and Heel Pain
As reported by U.S. News & World Report, GLP-1 medications have helped many people achieve significant weight loss and improve their overall health. However, rapid weight loss can sometimes lead to unexpected side effects, including a condition informally known as "Ozempic feet." The term refers to the loss of the natural fat padding that cushions the feet, particularly the heels, which can result in increased pressure, sensitivity, and pain with everyday activities such as walking and standing.
While the name is new, the condition itself is not. Rock G. Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH, DSc, Director of the Non-surgical Foot and Ankle Service at HSS, and the Heel Pain Center at HSS, has seen similar cases for years among patients who experienced dramatic weight loss following bariatric surgery. "The heel relies on a protective fat pad to absorb shock with every step," said Dr. Positano. "When that cushioning is lost too quickly, the heel can become extremely sensitive and painful, making even routine movement difficult." Understanding the symptoms and seeking appropriate treatment early can help patients stay active while continuing their weight-loss journey.
