What happens when your body attacks itself

Yahoo! reporter Brittany Jones-Cooper explains what happens to the body when you have an autoimmune disease in an online video.

HSS rheumatologist Michael D. Lockshin, MD, who spoke with Jones-Cooper, said depending on the condition, physicians typically treat patients with anti-inflammatory, corticosteroids, anti-malarial or immunosuppressive drugs.

However, Dr. Lockshin noted that treatment options vary. "There's no single answer for every patient. We have to experiment," he said.

Additionally, Dr. Lockshin pointed out that the best way to treat an autoimmune condition is "to have doctors talk to doctors from one specialty to another… and evaluate the patient all as one team."
