VTE Prophylaxis: Orthopedic Versus Hospitalist Perspectives

Anesthesiology News featured HSS rheumatologist Linda A. Russell, MD, in an article about strategies to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients after orthopedic surgery.

"In general, orthopedic surgeons worry about more bleeding, which may prevent patients from achieving full range of motion with a new joint or increase the risk of infection," said Dr. Russell.

According to Dr. Russell, HSS Spine has a VTE committee to review the latest anticoagulants and make the safest selection. She noted that the service has seen a dramatic reduction in rates of VTE with this approach.
