VIDEO: Physicians should be transparent with patients regarding appropriate, possible post-total joint reconstruction VTE prophylaxis

At the Interdisciplinary Conference on Orthopedic Value-Based Care, Orthopedics Today interviewed HSS rheumatologist Linda A. Russell, MD, about the importance of transparency between physicians and patients on possible VTE prophylaxis after total joint replacement.

To improve transparency, Dr. Russell explained that HSS stakeholders agreed to categorize VTE prophylaxis into three types which could decrease confusion for medical providers.

"Everyone taking care of the patient such as the physician assistants, the nurses, the residents and the fellows can follow a more scripted approach to VTE prophylaxis. We think this will decrease our rate of VTE at our hospital," said Dr. Russell.
