VIDEO: Length of stay decreases with use of adult spine deformity surgery care pathway

Orthopedics Today interviews Han Jo Kim, MD, spine surgeon at HSS, in a video about the findings of the recent study he and his colleagues presented at American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) 2021 and published in in The Spine Journal.

Dr. Kim detailed five steps of a critical care pathway that positively impacted patients who underwent adult spine deformity surgery.

“When we utilized and changed all five elements of these pathways, we were able to result in a decrease in our length of stay by about 38%; 95% of our patients were being discharged to home as opposed to rehab, whereas before it was closer to around 65%,” he explained.
