A new study led by Bella Mehta, MBBS, MS, rheumatologist at HSS, found that although African American patients experienced low in-hospital complication rates after bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA), they continued to undergo the procedure at significantly lower rates than white patients. Using national data from 2007 to 2016, researchers evaluated racial differences in temporal trends, adjusting for individual-, hospital- and community-level factors through multivariable logistic regression models. During the study period, an estimated 276,194 bilateral TKAs and more than 5.5 million unilateral TKAs were performed in the United States, with bilateral procedures declining from 5.53% of all TKAs in 2007–2008 to 4.03% in 2015–2016.
