Med Page Today reports on study led by Nilasha Ghosh, MD, MS, rheumatologist at HSS that found that apremilast provided relief for psoriasis flares in patients undergoing immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy for cancer. Patients with pre-existing psoriasis who experienced worsened disease after starting ICI treatment all saw partial or complete improvement with apremilast.

However, the medication was less effective for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) flares, with some patients showing no response, and six of 21 participants discontinued treatment due to side effects. Despite these limitations, researchers note that apremilast remains a promising option because it is not immunosuppressive and unlikely to interfere with cancer therapy.

The study, published in Arthritis Care & Research, highlights the potential role of apremilast for managing ICI-related psoriatic symptoms while avoiding treatments that could compromise anti-cancer responses.
