The Hidden Cost of Wearing Too-Small Shoes: An HSS Expert Explains the ‘Cinderella Complex’
Many people assume their shoe size stays the same for life, but that’s a common misconception, according to Rock Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH, DSc, Founder and Director of the Non-surgical Foot and Ankle Service and the Heel Pain Center at HSS.

Wearing ill-fitting shoes can contribute to foot pain, tendonitis, blisters, ankle swelling, and even discomfort in the knees, hips, and lower back. Instead of expecting shoes to "break in," Dr. Positano advised choosing footwear that feels comfortable from the start, with adequate support in the heel, arch, and forefoot.
