The Estimated Return To Play For Rockets' Harden Might Be Optimistic

Forbes featured a bylined article by Joshua S. Dines, MD, sports medicine surgeon at HSS, about the recent hamstring injury suffered by Houston Rockets' James Harden.

Dr. Dines, who did not treat Harden, explained that hamstring injuries are one of the most common injuries in sports that involve sprinting.

"The mechanism of injury is usually traumatic, and often occurs when athletes are at rest and begin sprinting suddenly," he noted.

Initial treatment involves icing the area to decrease swelling, followed by conditioning exercises to build the athlete's strength and mobility.

"Injections of stem cells or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) are often used for injuries such as these. Even if they don't speed up the recovery, biologics may decrease the amount of scar formed during the healing process which could potentially decrease future injury risk," wrote Dr. Dines.
