The Common Advice for Those With Thinning Bones Could Be All Wrong

The Wall Street Journal reported on a recent study that found that high-intensity weight training could increase bone-mineral density for women with thinning bones or osteoporosis.

According to the article, bone-building occurs in the areas of the bone you stress during a workout. HSS exercise physiologist Polly de Mille, RN, MA, RCEP, CSCS, USAT, explained that a deadlift is one of the best exercises because it uses "big muscles around the hips and hamstrings," causing the muscle to pull on the bone.

Additionally, de Mille noted that the exercise recruits the muscles around the lumbar and thoracic spine to stabilize the body during the lift.

Proper form is critical to safety, she added.
