HSS sports medicine surgeon Samuel A. Taylor, MD, wondered if he could deliver the same level of pre- and post-operative care by working with his patients over a computer screen, however the past few months have made him a telemedicine believer. “Telemedicine is a very good thing,” said Dr. Taylor. “It will continue to endure in my practice.”

Additionally, Michelle Shafiro PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, CSCS, physical therapist at HSS, encouraged patients to fill reusable grocery bags with canned soup instead of traditional weights when doing strength training in their kitchens. Patients who are on crutches, restricted from driving because of surgery or immunocompromised were ideal candidates for telemedicine. “As physical therapists, we’re so hands-on and used to spending a lot of time with patients,” said Shafiro. “We shifted and adjusted. You do what you can with what you’ve got.”

Shafiro wrote the best ways to safeguard children against overuse injuries are rest and sport diversification. She explained The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 1-2 days off per week from a sport to decrease the likelihood for injuries, and to take three non-consecutive months off from a sport per year to allow for adequate physical and physiological recovery. Additionally, Shafiro noted delaying specialization until late adolescence may lead to a higher chance of accomplishing athletic goals and also provides a greater chance of lifetime sports involvement, lifetime physical fitness and the possibility of elite sports participation.
