Raggio, MD, </span></span></a><span style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);"><span style="text-align:left;">pediatric orthopedic surgeon at HSS, </span></span><span style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);color:#000000;"><span style="text-align:left;">will be the chair of the OI Foundation Medical Advisory Council (MAC) beginning July 1, 2023.</span></span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;">As a longtime OI Foundation MAC member, Dr. Raggio has volunteered her time and expertise to review OI Foundation publications, and to advise the OI Foundation’s CEO, staff, and Board of Directors on the implications of new research discoveries and new medicines or treatments related to OI.                         <title>Early Trial Offers Hope Treating Rare &#039;Brittle Bone&#039; Disease</title>

Raggio, MD</p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>HealthDay reports on an early study published in the <i>Journal of Clinical Investigation</i> looking at disease mechanism and a drug’s potential to build bone density for the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).<br><br>HSS pediatric orthopedic surgeon <a href="https://www.hss.edu/physicians_raggio-cathleen.asp">Cathleen L. Raggio, MD</a>, who was not involved in the study, provided external perspective on the clinical implications of the findings.<br><br>Even though no medications are currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration specifically for the disease, Dr. Raggio explained that bisphosphonates, a mainstay of treatment for children with osteogenesis imperfecta, can increase kids' bone density and help them be more active.<br><br>According to Dr. Raggio, who researches and treats osteogenesis imperfecta, bisphosphonates are not specifically designed for OI, which means they target a symptom and not the disease process itself.<br><br>Dr. Raggio agreed that having medications that target a "pathway" in the OI process could "treat the core problem, rather than symptoms."<br><br>She noted she was "cautiously optimistic" about the findings but more work has to be done.<br><br>She explained larger studies of adults are needed to look at the safety and longer-term effectiveness of fresolimumab -- and to better understand why some patients may respond, while others do not.<br><br><span>Read the full article at </span><a href="https://consumer.healthday.com/2-21-early-trial-offers-hope-treating-brittle-bone-disease-2656677166.html"><span>Healthday.com</span></a><span>.</span></p>]]></content:encoded><category><![CDATA[news,Raggio,Pediatrics,Bone Health]]></category>

                        <title>Brianna Salinaro aims to be first American female Paralympian in taekwondo</title>

                        <guid>https://news.hss.edu/brianna-salinaro-aims-to-be-first-american-female-paralympian-in-taekwondo/</guid><pp:caseid>321742</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><em>ESPN</em> published a feature article on HSS patient and taekwondo athlete Brianna Salinaro, who aspires to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.</p>

<p>According to the article, Brianna has a form of cerebral palsy that affects her back and leg movement. At a young age, she had surgery to alleviate some of the muscle tension in her legs and to help her move better.</p>

<p>Today, she is on track to be the first American female Paralympian in taekwondo.</p>

<p>HSS pediatric orthopedic surgeon <a href="https://www.hss.edu/physicians_raggio-cathleen.asp">Cathleen L. Raggio, MD</a>, said Brianna has come so far in her chosen sport because of her diligence in stretching and hard work.</p>
