The accident left me with debilitating pain and dysfunction from foot drop. I quickly went from being a recruited athlete to play basketball in college to being unable to walk down the halls at my high school.”</p><p style="text-align:start;">He continued, “I had spine surgery along with restoration of mobility, and over time, was fortunate to resume normal living and return to sports. It was a hallmark moment for me, going from being disabled back to normal. I had been interested in being a doctor for some time but following the accident, I was inspired to help others recover just as I had. ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hamden Patch reports HSS has opened a new physician&nbsp;office in Hamden, which expands the HSS Sports Medicine Institute and HSS Spine in Connecticut. The office is staffed by <a href="https://www.hss.edu/physicians_blaine-theodore.asp">Theodore A. Blaine, MD</a>, sports medicine surgeon at HSS, and <a href="https://www.hss.edu/physicians_mcanany-steven.asp">Steven J. McAnany, MD</a>, spine surgeon at HSS.</p>

<p>Since early 2015, HSS has offered a full suite of medical and imaging services in Stamford encompassing sports medicine, spine services, hip and knee replacement, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, pain management rheumatology, pediatric orthopedics, sports rehabilitation and physical therapy. Since then, HSS has expanded its physical therapy programs to other locations in Stamford, Greenwich and New Canaan.</p>

]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>SpinalNewsInternational.com reports on a study published in <em>The Spine Journal</em> co-authored by <a href="https://www.hss.edu/physicians_mcanany-steven.asp">Steven J. McAnany, MD</a>, spine surgeon at HSS, examining patterns of cervical radiculopathy in a surgical population, to determine how often patients present &ldquo;Netter diagram&rdquo; versus nonstandard patterns.</p>

<p>Dr. McAnany and his co-author identified patients with single-level cervical radiculopathy operated on between March 2011 and March 2016 by six surgeons. The observed pattern of radiculopathy at presentation, including associated neck, shoulder, upper arm, forearm, and hand pain and/or numbness, was determined from chart review and patient-derived pain diagrams. The Fisher exact test was used to analyze categorical data and Student t-test was used for continuous variables. Additionally, a one-way ANOVA was used to determine differences in the observed versus expected radicular pattern and a logistic regression model assessed the effect of demographic variables on presentation with a nonstandard radicular pattern.</p>

<p>When a nonstandard radicular pattern was present, it differed by 1.68 dermatomal levels from the standard (p<0.0001). Neck pain - found in 81 percent of patients - was the most prevalent symptom and did not differ by cervical level. Furthermore, in a logistic regression model, none of the demographic variables were found to significantly impact the likelihood of presenting with a nonstandard radicular pattern.</p>

McAnany, MD</a>, who addressed the benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery.</p>

<p>"Minimally invasive spine surgery can accomplish the spinal decompression and/or stabilization of traditional surgery, while protecting the normal structures of the spine," Dr. McAnany wrote.</p>

<p>Additionally, Dr. McAnany explained that other benefits include less pain after surgery and lower blood loss.</p>

<p>"Your spine surgeon will take your condition into consideration when determining if a minimally invasive technique is right for you," he added.</p>
