Triptans, Gepants, Ditans: Which to Recommend First for Migraine?

According to Med Central, triptans may be more effective in the treatment of migraine compared to many of the recently FDA-approved medications, including the gepants ubrogepant and rimegepant, and the selective serotonin receptor agonist lasmiditan, according to a new study published in the BMJ.

Although several drug classes of drugs are available for the treatment of migraine, there is still no clear guideline on which should be prescribed first. Physicians generally prescribe NSAIDs first-line and recommend triptans in severe cases or when patients do not respond to NSAIDs.

“Triptans are [also] generally more effective than over-the-counter pain relief medication such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or NSAIDs,” Saritha Kosarussavadi, MD, MS, neurologist at HSS, told MedCentral. Dr. Kosarussavadi was not involved in the study.
