Simovitch, MD</a>, director of the shoulder division and co-medical director at HSS Florida, and the study’s principal investigator. “Our simulator employs advanced technology and complex algorithms to deliver a realistic and immersive virtual golf experience.”</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The researchers will use the simulator in combination with a highly sophisticated system for motion analysis known as DARI that uses high-speed cameras to capture the golfer’s movements from multiple angles. “We will perform motion analysis of the torso, shoulder, elbow, hip and knee while simultaneously looking at vital information provided by the golf simulator such as ball spin, distance, trajectory and smash factor,” Dr. Simovitch explains.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Rodger Hess, an avid golfer and one of Dr. Simovitch’s patients, had shoulder replacement surgery last month to relieve painful arthritis. The 86-year-old Jupiter resident, who has been playing golf since he was a teenager and continued to play up until his surgery, said he found the study interesting. So, a few days before his left shoulder replacement, he played virtual golf on the simulator and data was collected.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">“I’m curious to see what my range of motion is after my recovery compared to before the surgery,” Mr. Hess says. “Maybe I’ll be able to turn my body more, and it will improve.” Since shoulder replacement surgery entails months of physical therapy and healing, Mr. Hess is scheduled to be back on the golf simulator in May.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The HSS Florida study aims to follow up to 300 patients over two years to monitor their progress. Dr. Simovitch notes that down the road, their findings could lead to changes in rehabilitation to maximize outcomes for golfers after joint replacement or even lead to modifications in how the surgery is performed.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Outside of the study, HSS Rehabilitation and Performance facilities in New York City and Florida use their golf simulators to help devoted players get back in the game after an injury or surgery. Often times, the golfer will hurt with bending, lifting or twisting especially if weight is added,” he continued.<br><br>Dr. Creighton said, “As the golfer continues to age, they can develop arthritis of the facet joints of the lumbar spine which again typically hurt with twisting and with the extension of the painful area. Most of the time, injury to the low back occurs as a result of mobility issues in the thoracic spine (at the back of the chest), mid back or mobility issues in the hip. Issues with mobility in the thoracic spine and hip result in more torque and shear force taking place in the lumbar spine, causing injury to the bones, discs and joints.”<br><br>“The most common injuries that occur at the elbow are medial and lateral elbow tendinopathies, also known as medial and lateral epicondylitis,” Dr. Creighton explained. “The tendon undergoes change and sometimes has partial tearing as a result of overuse and poor technique. The golfer typically hurts at the prominent bone on the inside or the outside of the elbow and just down the arm from those areas. When looking at the wrist, injuries frequently occur on the inside or outside of the wrist, ulnar and radial side respectively.”<br><br>Dr. Creighton advised, “As with any activity, there is likely a point when the golfer is playing too much. However, that point of excessive golf is likely different for each individual. The golfer has likely reached that point once the pain and injury occur. So, it is recommended that the golfer should address this pain and injury and consider taking some time off to allow for recovery. Maybe.&rdquo; Dr. Ricci, who is well versed in the trauma sustained in high-speed car crashes, said Woods&rsquo; mangled ankle and foot could prove to be the hardest to overcome, depending on the severity of the injuries, which hasn&rsquo;t been disclosed. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s going to impact his ability to pivot on that leg, to pivot normally and to flex the ankle and foot normally,&rdquo; he cited, of the pins and screws Woods had installed.</p><p>Woods&rsquo; mature age as a professional athlete also doesn&rsquo;t help in speeding up the recovery process. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s an incredible athlete, but as you get up into your 40s and beyond, the healing times slow down and it takes longer to recover from injuries,&rdquo; noted Dr. Metzl. &ldquo;This is going to take months. This is a multiple-surgery [condition],&rdquo; explained Dr. Helfet. With an open fracture, he said, protocols call for multiple debridements &mdash; the removal of dead, damaged or infected tissue. Additionally, Woods &ldquo;may need soft-tissue procedures, maybe a skin graft. He may need multiple, additional procedures to stabilize the bone perfectly, to restore the length, alignment and rotation of the leg,&rdquo; noted&nbsp;Dr. Helfet.</p><p>&ldquo;The risk of an injury like this is not necessarily lifesaving; it&rsquo;s limb-saving.
