Amidst this excitement, we must remember that the best changes typically do not come when we seek to escape that which is not desirable, but when we seek to enhance that which is desirable. The more rapid the change, the greater the risk of losing that which is worth keeping. In three years, if we do it right, health systems will look different because we will have better used technology to restore our true purpose, with a primary focus on caring, about the individuals in our organizations – and most importantly, our patients. If we do not do it right, health systems will look different, but we will have drifted further from this focus due to the artificial medium. Technology is the constant. The variable is what we will use it for.”

]]>The Nurse Residency Program and Peri-Operative Fellowship Program at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, have achieved Practice Transition Accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

The HSS Nurse Residency Program, established in 2008, is a leader in the field, with best practices for transitioning new nurses to the bedside while supporting professional development of nursing personnel. Preceptors successfully adapted the program to overcome unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The newly accredited HSS Peri-Operative Fellowship Program invites registered nurse (RN) fellows to work alongside experienced providers in the operating room as they transition between practice settings and rotate through different orthopedic services such as Total Arthroplasty, Spine, Sports, Trauma/Limb Lengthening, and Hand and Foot.

Nurses in accredited transition programs benefit from evidence-based curricula that promote the acquisition of knowledge, skills and professional behaviors necessary to deliver safe, high-quality care. Nursing residents and fellows are given the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff and learn in a real-life setting to be better prepared and more confident as they enter the workforce or transition practice settings. “The driving focus of our resident fellowship program is clinical and professional growth. HSS fosters an environment that encourages our residents to gain the skills needed to perform high-quality patient care, as well as to grow and advance professionally along the clinical ladder,” said Ingrid Herrera-Capoziello, DNP, NPD-BC, NE-BC, assistant vice president, Nursing Excellence & Professional Development at HSS. “We are proud of the work we have done and continue to do to guide nurses through this growth trajectory during a pivotal time in their careers.”

Coyne said, “There’s already too much you can’t control in healthcare. We can’t always prevent the cause of a patient’s hospitalization, be it a stroke, cancer, or something else. But once a patient is in a facility, nothing bad should happen that we can prevent.”

]]>Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the leading academic medical center specialized in musculoskeletal health, has named Paul Coyne, DNP, MBA, MS, APRN, AGPCNP-BC, as Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive (CNE). HSS is ranked #1 in Orthopedics in the world according to Newsweek, and in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report.  HSS is also the first hospital in New York State and among less than one half of one percent of hospitals nationwide to earn Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Service from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the profession’s highest honor, five consecutive times.

Dr. Coyne joined the HSS nursing staff in 2017.  Most recently, he served as vice president, clinical practice & chief nursing informatics officer. His work pioneering improvements in patient safety and satisfaction and creating efficiencies in the healthcare setting has earned him “40 Under 40” recognition from Crain’s New York, and “Top 25 Innovator” from Modern Healthcare.

Dr. Coyne earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees from Columbia University to become an adult-gerontology nurse practitioner with a subspecialty in palliative care. He earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science (MS) degrees from Northeastern University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Providence College.

His new role at HSS is effective May 2.
