Dr. Manning shared that no studies have shown that smelling salts improves performance. She said smelling salts have only been approved for fainting because of the temporary increase of blood flow to the brain, and increased heart and respiratory rates can wake a person up.

As he watched Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum roll on the floor gripping his ankle, Dr. O’Malley’s worst fear—and professional opinion—was that Tatum had torn his Achilles tendon. In one agonizing moment, Boston’s hopes of repeating as champions crumbled on the hardwood.

There's another effect of ACL tears that can’t be understated: The mental impact can be huge. “This is an injury that typically occurs in athletic people who are participating in a sport or doing some sort of high-level activity, and it really derails their mobility and their desires for sport and activity, whether short- or long-term,” Dr. Ode says. “It’s totally okay to have an emotional response.”

As a former Division I athlete myself, I'm honored to remain connected to the sport I love—and treat some of the world's most elite players. I know I've been tasked with caring for a historically marginalized population at a time when the healthcare system is finally starting to value female athletes. We're long overdue for a shift to a proactive model of perinatal care—care that supports women before, during, and after pregnancy—and integrates musculoskeletal medicine, physical therapy, and nutrition.

USC sophomore star JuJu Watkins’ knee buckled beneath her during the first quarter of the Trojans’ second-round win over Mississippi State in the NCAA tournament. Watkins was carried to the locker room, and an MRI revealed that she sustained a torn ACL. The injury not only ends her season just as USC’s tournament run is beginning, but also presumably will require her to sit out well into next season.

“We’ve gotten much better at not just looking at it as a specific window, like, ‘OK, nine months and now you’re ready,’” said Gabriella E. There’s nothing wrong even with a 12-month recovery. I want to be very explicit about that. There are many people who it takes 12 months.”

“There are many factors associated with the injury that can influence his recovery timeline. If the injury does not extend into his acetabulum or disrupt his pelvic ring his recovery will be much more reliable and quicker. He will likely be unable to return to the court for at least 3-6 months, but the injury and recovery is variable. Returning too soon increases the risk for refracture,” explained Dr. Page. 

“His potential return later in the season will depend on the nature of the injury, however it is difficult to assess without reviewing his imaging studies. The timeline for recovery is highly contingent on the specifics of the injury,” said Dr. Page.
