While in high school, Dr. Conti volunteered at a local hospital, where he was exposed to the problems caused by improper footwear.

This inspired him to not only become a doctor, but to start the nonprofit “Our Hearts to Your Soles,” which gives shoes, socks and exams to those in need.

“I realized there was a need to provide people who don’t have access to shoes, shoes,” Dr. Conti said. “And at school, we always provided coats and hats for the winter, but no one ever provided shoes.”

Dr. Conti quickly got to work, and with the help of donations in 2006, he was able to give out 50 new pairs of shoes to the homeless. Since then, he’s never looked back.

“People really care what they wear on their feet, and I think being able to provide someone with a new pair of shoes provides them with a lot of dignity,” Dr. Conti said.

Seventeen years later, Dr. Conti and his organization have multiplied their efforts, providing more than 50,000 pairs of shoes to those in need.

Dr. Conti sets up clinics inside pantries and shelters to provide support. As a licensed foot and ankle surgeon at HSS, he also provides free medical checkups, bringing along his colleagues and family to help out.

Dr. Drakos had a fellowship with the Giants and was on the committee charged with making a recommendation about different synthetic turf surfaces for MetLife Stadium -- home of the Giants and Jets -- before its inaugural season in 2010. Dr. Drakos said grass wasn't an option. The two teams had played on synthetic turf for all but three seasons since they began sharing the old Giants Stadium when it opened in 1976. Dr. Drakos wasn't in the room when the surface was chosen, but he gave his opinion ahead of time. "Me and probably six or seven other doctors were sitting there listening to all these different presentations [from turf companies]," Dr. Drakos said. "And at the end, I said, 'Listen, from a medical standpoint, we should do grass.'"

MetLife stuck with synthetic turf because natural grass did not hold up for the busy fall schedule with two teams, 20 NFL home games and the Northeast climate.

But then and now, Dr. Drakos' research found grass is best for players' health, particularly when it comes to ankle and noncontact knee injuries. He said: "The data is pretty conclusive." He also said turf is stickier and less forgiving, which can cause the foot to catch and send torque up to the knee.

Whether you're an avid weight lifter, runner, or HIIT enthusiast, some level of muscle soreness is probably inevitable. And if you’re training for a marathon, a few (or a lot of) aches is pretty much par for the (literal) course. That said, there are research- and expert-backed ways to help sore muscles, even if they won't spare you the discomfort altogether.

Your feet work very hard when you run, and you place a lot of stress on the multiple small joints in the foot,” said Dr. Cody. “And just like the other muscles in your legs, the little muscles in your feet can get overworked and sore.” In addition to massage (again!), here are four other strategies Dr. Cody recommends:

• Recovery sandals: “These have very thick, cushioned soles to take stress off the foot,” Dr. Cody said. 
• Foot exercises: “Working on strengthening the little intrinsic muscles of the foot is very important for runners,” advised Dr. Cody. Try to push your toes down to the ground without curling them or use your toes to pick up marbles.
• Stiffer sneaks: “The more flexible the sole of the shoe, the harder your little foot muscles will have to work,” Dr. Cody explained.

“Basically, what we found is that the flatfoot patients had compromise of the spring ligament more than our control patients and the worse the cervical and spring ligaments became, the worse deformed the foot was, particularly in abduction,” Dr. Ellis said about the study, which was a Roger A. “The take-home is that, going forward, we're going to have to start looking at the cervical ligament,” Dr. Ellis added. We need to study it more, and we're going to need to develop techniques to recreate or reconstruct that ligament as part of our flatfoot reconstructive surgeries. And my guess is that, over time, this is going to help increase or improve our patient outcomes with that surgery."

According to Dr. Cody, the key is to look for a “thicker, stiffer sole.” How to identify that? “You can test the stiffness of the shoe by trying to bend it from heel to toe,” she said. “A stiff shoe will be very difficult to bend.”

Then look for breathable fabrics like light wool and canvas rather than, say, leather, and a cut that dips cleanly below the ankle bone. 

And finally, as with all shoes, wear them before you pack them. It’s the only real way to know if you can walk that way.

Dr. Johnson advised that for most people, "no major heel drop" is best for walking shoes, and many brands choose not to list heel drop.

Dr. Johnson said that thick cushioning can help “lessen impact per step and absorb impact,” and she also finds that cushioning for the arches "helps with flat feet and overpronators to keep the foot supported." But too much cushioning can feel bulky, so "you can feel unbalanced."

If you have any existing foot pain, Dr. Metzl suggested going with the pair that "makes the pain go away when you're walking around the store," as that's a good indicator you've found a winning shoe.

Dr. Metzl stressed that comfort is key. Regardless of the product claims, you should be “as objective as you can for support and comfort,” he noted.
