Steroid Injections for Arthritis Pain—Reasons to Think Twice

According to the article, researchers at HSS found that getting an injection could increase the risk for infection after hip replacement surgery. It's recommended to wait at least three months after a cortisone injection before making the decision to undergo surgery.

Beth E. Shubin Stein, MD, sports medicine surgeon at HSS, explains alternative options for arthritis pain including hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell injections. 

She notes that none of the existing treatments can regrow cartilage and all have some drawbacks. But they can be helpful in at least delaying joint replacement surgery in many people.
