Sarah Strong’s Achilles Soreness: What HSS Experts Say About Recovery and Injury Risk

UConn women’s basketball star Sarah Strong is taking the summer off from basketball activities to recover from Achilles soreness after playing through symptoms for much of last season. According to Kurt V. Voellmicke, MD, foot and ankle surgeon at HSS, rest and a structured rehabilitation program are key to allowing the tendon to heal and reducing the risk of more serious injury.

Recovery from Achilles tendinopathy often includes strengthening, mobility work and low-impact exercise to gradually rebuild tendon resilience. For athletes, prioritizing recovery now can support long-term health and performance while helping ensure a safe return to play.

"Certainly that risk of injury, of rupturing, would be higher if you don't give yourself adequate time to heal and recover, and if you don’t make the changes that you need to change or you need to make going forward," said Dr. Voellmicke.
