Running (or Walking Briskly) Away From Addiction
U.S. News & World Report featured HSS primary care sports medicine physician Jordan D. Metzl, MD, in an article about how exercise could decrease substance abuse.
According to the article, a recent study found that playing football or doing circuit training led to short-term reductions in drug cravings and improvements in mood.
"When you feel better you're less likely to engage in things that are bad for you. Exercise brings a dopaminergic surge that makes you feel better," said Dr. Metzl, who was not involved in the study.
