Reproductive Health in Rheumatoid Arthritis

MedPage Today discusses reproductive health for people living with rheumatoid arthritis and includes insight about optimizing fertility, contraception, and pregnancy outcomes from Lisa R. Sammaritano, MD, rheumatologist at HSS and lead author of the 2020 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Guideline for the Management of Reproductive Health in Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases.

According to Dr. Sammaritano, “In general, in all of our patients with rheumatic diseases the disorder has an impact on their reproductive life.”

She continued, “The risks are more pronounced for some patients, such as those with lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome, where there is a higher risk of pregnancy loss and elevated estrogen levels that can significantly increase the risk of blood clots, but for women with rheumatoid arthritis [RA], there are still risks we should be cognizant of.”
