Psoriasis, PsA, and pregnancy: Tailoring treatment with increasing data

MDEdge Dermatology discusses pregnancy for women with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) according to experts including HSS rheumatologist Lisa R. Sammaritano, MD.

Dr. Sammaritano advised patients with PsA to plan for pregnancy during a period of inactive disease. “Pregnancy is best planned while patients have quiescent disease on pregnancy-compatible medications,” said Dr. Sammaritano. “We encourage [more] rheumatologists to be actively involved in pregnancy planning [in order] to guide therapy.”

Additionally, Dr. Sammaritano provided guidance for tailoring PsA treatment based on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) guidelines for managing reproductive health in rheumatic conditions, which include recommendations on biologic and other therapies used to treat the disease.
