Prevalence of CBD to control pain, sleep may suggest need for opioid alternatives

Healio reports on new HSS research presented at the Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Meeting that found that many adults undergoing elective sports medicine procedures are self‑medicating with CBD, underscoring a need for safer alternatives to opioids. 

In a survey of 144 patients, nearly 40% reported trying CBD—most often for pain or sleep—and about one‑third found it moderately or very helpful. 

Alexandra Sideris, PhD, director of the Pain Prevention Research Center at HSS, noted that these patterns highlight the importance of open perioperative conversations about CBD use and the need for higher‑quality studies to better understand its role in managing pain and sleep.
