Osseointegration in the femur, tibia may improve mobility, quality of life
Healio reported on a new study from HSS that found patients with either femur-level or tibia-level amputations may experience significant improvement in mobility and quality of life with press-fit osseointegration. Taylor J. Reif, MD, limb lengthening and orthopedic oncology surgeon at HSS told the outlet about results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting.
“We were really encouraged by all of this data both in terms of the safety and the improvements we saw,” said Dr. Reif. “We think osseointegration should still continue to be offered and evaluated in the tibia.”
Despite the positive results of this study, Dr. Reif said he does not think osseointegration needs to be performed in every patient with a tibia-level amputation.
“We are not saying this has to be for everyone, but for people who think it is the right fit for them, who maybe need a bump in their function or who are having problems with their socket,” Dr. Reif explained. “I certainly expect 20 years from now we are going to see a lot more below-knee amputees with osseointegration than we do today.”
