Olympians Are Arriving During South Korea's Flu Season — Are They At Risk?

As athletes arrive in Pyeongchang for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Newsweek reporter Kate Sheridan writes about South Korea's current flu season and what it could mean for competing Olympians.

According to the article, athletes could be susceptible to the flu if they are over-training. HSS sports medicine surgeon Scott A. Rodeo, MD, said "fatigue, travel, jet lag, change of schedule" can also contribute stress and lower a person's defenses against the flu.

Since Olympic teams live and train together, Dr. Rodeo noted that if one person gets the flu, the rest of the team could be at risk as well.

However, Dr. Rodeo said that how much the flu will affect a person's performance will vary.
