Med Central reports that The American College of Rheumatology has updated its recommendations for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with key changes in the areas of screening, treatment, and monitoring. The guideline was recently published in Arthritis Care & Research.

The goal of the new guideline is to provide evidence-based expert guidance on treatment and management of non-renal SLE. The update emphasizes glucocorticoid tapering and discontinuation when possible, and acknowledges the persistent impact of health care disparity as a barrier to accessing care. A separate ACR guideline on lupus nephritis is awaiting publication.

Lisa R. Sammaritano, MD, rheumatologist at HSS served as lead author of the new guideline and presented the update at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR Convergence 2025).
