Neutral version, retroversion of humeral component may not impact outcomes of RSA
Lawrence V. Gulotta, MD, sports medicine surgeon at HSS commented on a study which found that patients undergoing reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) with the humeral component in either neutral version or 30° retroversion had similar outcomes at a 2-year follow-up.
The randomized study involved 66 patients, and outcome measures included range of motion, pain scores, and functional assessments. No significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of abduction, forward elevation, internal and external rotation, muscle strength, or complication rates.
Dr. Gulotta emphasized that despite previous biomechanical studies suggesting otherwise, adjusting humeral version does not consistently improve shoulder rotation outcomes in RSA. He highlighted the complexity of shoulder rotation and the need for a customized approach, suggesting that advances in preoperative planning and intraoperative navigation could enhance patient outcomes in the future.
