Multimodal Analgesia Reduces Opioids, Complications After Surgery

A MedPage Today article reports on study findings from HSS anesthesiologist Stavros G. Memtsoudis, MD, PhD, who reviewed how the use of multiple analgesics could reduce opioid use.

According to the article, total hip replacement patients who received more than two methods of pain relief along with opioids had up to an 18.5 percent decrease in opioid prescriptions.

"While opioids have an important role to play perioperatively, their utilization and our reliance on this drug class should be minimized to improve outcomes. This is especially important as we are trying to understand if perioperative opioid exposure may contribute to the ongoing opioid epidemic," said Dr. Memtsoudis.
