Healio recently covered research from HSS showing that patients who underwent either a minimally invasive (MIS) or traditional open Lapidus procedure for bunions experienced similar improvements in pain, physical function and overall health one year after surgery.

Presented at the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) Annual Meeting, the study by Scott J. Ellis, MD; A. Holly Johnson, MD; and colleagues found that both surgical approaches produced meaningful clinical improvements and had comparable complication rates among patients with moderate-to-severe hallux valgus.

“Surgeons can achieve good results with both minimally invasive and open techniques,” Ellis said. “In my experience, it is best to do the procedure that, in my hands, I know will give the best outcome to my patients.”
