Crain’s New York Business reports Empire BlueCross BlueShield has selected 50 individuals as the 2020 Whole Health Heroes including HSS anesthesiologist Stavros G. Memtsoudis, MD, PhD, MBA, for their display of extraordinary leadership, dedication, empathy, and remarkable compassion to help ensure the safety and wellness of all New Yorkers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Memtsoudis led the conversion of HSS into a COVID-19 facility while increasing bed capacity in the intensive care unit (ICU) by more than 500%. In addition, Dr. Memtsoudis’ training as an anesthesiologist proved critical in treating COVID-19 units out of operating rooms and using anesthesia machines as ventilators. Dr. Memtsoudis published COVID-19 research, including a study of how the cessation of elective surgeries affected ICU bed capacity.
