Healio highlights a study presented at the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Meeting suggests that low-profile total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) implants may increase the risk of tibial loosening. Led by Elizabeth A. Cody, MD, foot and ankle surgeon at HSS, the study found a 6.8% rate of global lucency and revision for loosening within one year.

“Low-profile total ankle replacements have proliferated in recent years, for good reasons. They have less bone resection than earlier implants, they're generally simpler and easier techniques and most of them have patient-specific cutting guides, which can make the procedure even simpler,” said Dr. Cody.
