Knee pain? Here's what might be causing it

HSS hip and knee surgeon Geoffrey H. Westrich, MD, and rheumatologist Theodore R. Fields, MD, FACP, explained how to treat knee pain in an article in Arthritis Today.

If a patient has osteoarthritis, Dr. Westrich cautioned to avoid arthroscopic surgery. "It does nothing to relieve arthritis pain," he said.

For rheumatoid arthritis in the knee, typical treatment involves corticosteroid injections, over the counter pain relievers and physical therapy.
