What Is Blood Flow Restriction Training?

Shape.com reports on how to determine if blood flow restriction training (BFR) is right for you according to experts.

BFR training is a highly effective method of getting stronger and growing your muscle mass while using weights that are much lighter than what you would use. It incorporates a specialized tourniquet system, commonly wrapped around the arms just under the shoulder or around the legs just below the hip, to decrease blood flow to your limbs.

Shape.com spoke to Jenna Baynes, PT, DPT, ATC, OCS, physical therapist at HSS, who explained BFR sessions are usually short. “In our clinic, we typically will do one exercise for seven minutes and, at most, will do three exercises total.”
