If It Feels Like It's Impossible to Lose Belly Fat, This Is What an Expert Wants You to Do

POPSUGAR.com spoke to Jason Machowsky, RD, CSSD, RCEP, CSCS, exercise physiologist at HSS, who shared his recommendations to consider for losing belly fat. “From a simplistic perspective, I would say consistently move more than you are doing now and eat a bit better: more veggies, lean protein, and lower-calorie carbs like fruits and starchy vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, peas, and squash)," said Machowsky. He explained that any nutritional changes you make should be sustainable, citing “If cutting out something is a dealbreaker for long-term compliance, then it's not worth it."

Additionally, you should incorporate strength training into your workout routine, as it can help you lose weight and burn fat. You can also do cardio, but you must not overdo it, as cardio can potentially be catabolic (or burns both fat and muscle). Aside from exercise and nutrition, Machowsky advised to focus on having good posture, stating "having poor posture can lead to a less-flattering midline."

Machowsky concluded that it is possible to start seeing fat-loss results within a few weeks, but whether or not the fat reduction is specifically from your belly will vary person to person.
