It's not just athletes: Doctors at the Olympics have also worked years to get there
STAT reporter Leah Samuel writes about the experiences of former U.S. Olympic volunteer physicians, including the application process to become a team physician. According to the article, the U.S. Olympic Committee's Sports Medicine Division recruits volunteer doctors who work with the Olympic teams during training, practices and at the games themselves.
HSS sports medicine surgeon Scott A. Rodeo, MD, volunteered with the U.S. Olympic Swim Team in 2004, 2008 and 2012. He explained that the initial part of the application process involves participating in an internship to understand the division's system.
At the games, Dr. Rodeo noted that physicians treat 'travel medicine' which can include "a lot of stomachaches and everything that comes with eating different food or drinking different water or switching to a different time zone".
The job can be demanding because of the commitment it requires. "You do it because you want to give back. You have to love it to do it," said Dr. Rodeo.
