Is Running Bad for Your Knees? A Doctor and Exercise Physiologist Explain
Contrary to popular belief, running doesn't necessarily harm your knees. In fact, experts suggest that, when done correctly, running can strengthen joints and reduce the risk of arthritis.
There’s a myth out there that running can lead to arthritis, but James N. Robinson, MD, sports medicine physician at HSS, says the research doesn’t support this: “There is no convincing data that running or impact activities causes arthritis,” he says, though injuries such as runner’s knee, stress fractures, or tendonitis can occur, often due to poor form, or increasing mileage too quickly.
