Is Frailty Associated with Worse Outcomes after Total Joint Replacements?

HSS researchers set out to determine if frailty is associated with worse clinical outcomes one year after total hip or knee replacement. Patients completed various health questionnaires both pre-operatively and one year after surgery, including the Hip/Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. Investigators analyzed outcomes in 740 patients (303 total hip replacements and 437 total knee replacements) ranging in age from 65 to 94, with a median age of 72 years old. After their analysis, the researchers concluded that frailty does not appear to be independently associated with worse outcomes one year after hip or knee replacement.
