HSS Patient and Physical Therapist Runs Marathon After Life-Changing Hip Surgery

Marathon

Sienna Frank, PT, DPT, knows the patient experience at HSS from both sides. Now a physical therapist at HSS, Frank was once a patient herself, undergoing hip surgery that helped her return to an active lifestyle. Years later, she reached another milestone in that journey, completing the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon on November 1.

Frank first turned to HSS after experiencing hip pain that affected her ability to stay active and being told there wasn’t anything that could be done. In May 2013, she underwent surgery with Bryan T. Kelly, MD, MBA, President and CEO of HSS, to treat hip impingement and address a labral tear. Surgery, followed by rehabilitation, helped Frank get back to the activities she loved and ultimately inspired her career in physical therapy.

Today, Frank helps patients at HSS navigate their own recoveries. She has a special interest in treating the lower extremity, including the hip, knee and ankle, as well as working with endurance athletes such as runners and cyclists.

Her journey came full circle when she took on 26.2 miles through New York City, drawing on both her personal experience as a patient and her professional experience helping others return to movement. Frank shared her story with ABC News ahead of the marathon. Anna K. Ribaudo, PT, DPT, OCS, CKTP, physical therapist at HSS, and Dr. Kelly also appeared in the segment, highlighting Frank’s path from hip surgery and rehabilitation to the finish line of her first marathon in New York.
