HSS commits to expansions, digital health in 2021

Crain’s New York Business interviews Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO at HSS, who discussed plans for expansion and the continued transformation of care on the digital front at HSS in 2021.

Efforts to resume expansion will be key this year, noted Mr. Shapiro. HSS Florida will experience growth this year, and the hospital will invest in more locations to expand its outpatient and ambulatory service offerings. "Like many other health systems, the focus is on bringing care closer to where people live, so they don't have to travel as far," explained Mr. Shapiro. HSS' main campus and Hudson Yards and Uniondale, Long Island, locations will continue to grow this year, and plans for a Midtown location are underway, he continued.

The pandemic outlined a new opportunity for HSS: digital health. Prior to COVID-19, HSS handled about 1,000 telehealth visits on average each year, but from March through October, that volume surged to over 100,000 visits. "We will continue to transform how we deliver care, especially on the digital front," said Mr. Shapiro. HSS is planning to launch a digital health platform in the second quarter of this year, he added.
