How to Motivate and Safely Train for Marathon Season During the Pandemic

The Wall Street Journal discusses how to safely train and complete the virtual New York City Marathon injury free, according to experts including HSS sports medicine physicians Jordan D. Metzl, MD and Brett G. Toresdahl, MD.

“With less access to gyms and people sitting for longer stretches as they work from home, many runners are experiencing more aches and pains than usual,” explained Dr. Metzl. Dr. Toresdahl emphasized the importance of listening to the body versus a training program, noting soreness that goes away with warming up and within the first mile run is OK. However he cautioned, “If there is pain that gets worse throughout the course of a run and causes a runner to limp or change how they run, that should be seen by a sports medicine specialist.”
