How to Identify - and Recover From - Overtraining

Jordan D. Metzl, MD, primary care sports medicine physician at HSS, pens an article for Runner's World on identifying and recovering from overtraining.

Dr. Metzl explains how December can be peak timing for overtraining injuries in runners who have trained for fall marathons.

Overtraining can be characterized by three key areas: mental, hormonal and physical.

Dr. Metzl also shares advice to those who sit out training due to an injury: "Take a deep breath, do some cross training, and relax. It's better to be slightly undertrained and healthy when you toe the line than develop or worsen an injury due to overtraining."
