Houck should be OK for 2023

The Boston Globe reports Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck underwent a lumbar diskectomy and Frank P. Cammisa Jr., MD, chief emeritus of HSS Spine, shares general comments on the injury and procedure.

According to Dr. Cammisa, who did not treat Houck, “He should have full range of motion and be ready for spring training. He has a lot of time to heal.”

Dr. Cammisa said a diskectomy is microsurgery to treat a herniated disk. Cartilage pressing on a nerve is shaved.

“It’s unlikely, even for a pitcher, that he’d have a problem once it heals,” Dr. Cammisa noted.
