Hospital CEOs to devise surge plan to add 9,000 beds

Crain's New York Business reports that Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order to create 9,000 additional hospital beds to accommodate for an anticipated surge of patients with COVID-19.

Some health systems have already taken steps to reduce or cancel elective surgeries.

Louis A. Shapiro, CEO and president of HSS, shared that HSS developed a list of essential surgeries including procedures to address fractures and infections. HSS will make itself available to receive orthopedic cases that other hospitals can no longer handle.

"Our excess capacity, whether it's supplies, people or physical capacity, will be repurposed to help New York–Presbyterian maximize their ability to take care of this problem," Mr. Shapiro said.
